What are the signs of jaundice?
For some individuals, there may be no visible jaundice symptoms; in others, there are. Generally, the severity of the symptoms will depend on the cause of jaundice and how quickly the disease has developed.
For many short-term cases of jaundice, it's typically caused by an infection of some sort. Some symptoms of infection-induced jaundice include:
- Fever and/or chills
- Abdominal pain
- Flu-like symptoms
- Yellowing of the skin and eyes
- Dark-colored urine
- Clay-colored stool
You may be experiencing jaundice related to liver disease if you're experiencing symptoms such as unexpected weight loss, itchy skin, or abdominal pain (in the case of pancreatic or biliary tract cancer). If you have liver disease and develop jaundice, you may experience:
- Hepatitis A, B, or C
- Liver inflammation
- Skin disease (Pyoderma gangrenosum)
- Polyarthralgia (inflammation of the joints)
How is jaundice diagnosed and treated?
Generally, the first thing we'll check for when diagnosing jaundice is liver disease. Signs that liver disease could be present include:
- Easily bruised skin
- Spider veins
- Red coloration of the palms and fingertips (palmar erythema)
We may perform other tests to check your bilirubin levels as well as for other liver issues. These may include:
- Urine test

- Biopsy
The good news is that jaundice often doesn't require treatment for adults. However, there can be complications related to jaundice that should be treated. This could include symptoms like:
