Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) is a specialized type of MRI that produces detailed images of the pancreatic and hepatobiliary systems. These systems include the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, pancreas, and pancreatic ducts. These detailed images are created by using radio waves, a computer, and a powerful magnetic field. Our Thibodaux, LA GI providers commonly use an MRCP as a diagnostic tool for various GI symptoms and conditions like abdominal pain, and pancreatitis. To learn more about magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography and if it may be a beneficial procedure for you, contact one of our Digestive Health Center locations to request a consultation.

Our team at Digestive Health Center will provide you with detailed instructions on how to prepare for your MRCP. In most cases, you will be asked to refrain from eating or drinking several hours before your exam. Your provider may use a contrast agent during your exam. Before your exam, any allergies you have should be discussed with your provider. Like most MRIs, you should not wear any metal jewelry to your exam and you should notify your provider of any metal implants or implanted electronic devices you may have. You should also let your provider know if you are pregnant, as intense magnetic fields may be unsafe for early pregnancies.

We recommend arriving at least 30 minutes prior to your exam. You may be asked to change into a gown and asked to lie down on the moveable exam table. If a contrast agent is being used during your exam, our team will ask you to either ingest the agent or the agent will be administered through an IV. An MRCP will take a series of detailed images in sequences and you will hear the machine making a variety of noises during each sequence. Our team will not be in the room with you during the exam, but there is a two-way intercom that will allow our team to hear you and speak with you. The imaging sequences will take approximately 45 minutes but will depend on the area that is being assessed. Once the exam is complete, the images will be sent to your GI provider to be reviewed. Once your provider has analyzed your images, your Thibodaux, LA provider will discuss their findings with you.
